The song was born in 1932, when the author, Consuelo Velázquez, was just16 years old. Legend has it that she had not fallen in love, but it is not until 1940 that the lyrics reached their maturity - at the time of the WWII. Consuelo, aware of the separation of couples and marriages due to the war, improved the lyrics as a dedication to the heroes in love who went to the front and did not know if they would see their loved ones again. It is at this time that the lyrics make total sense - the possibility of the loss of a loved one with the urgent need to take advantage of every moment, to make the other love done feel, a great proof of love of the time, passionate kisses.

In this historical context, the song became an international success.  The first to record it in Mexico was Emilio Tuero.  Then in the United States in 1944, Andy Russell, spent 14 weeks in the top ten of the popularity charts.  It was not  until Nat King Cole recorded it in Spanish, that  they managed to break the language barriers.

The song has been translated into 40 languages, sung around the world by the most iconic singers of the last century.

Frank Sinatra, Pedro Infante, Nat King Cole, Elvis Presley, Edith Piaf, Nicola Di Bari, Cesaria Evora, Placido Domingo, Joāo Gilberto, Sara Montiel, Alejandro Fernandez, Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bubble, and Luis Miguel, among others, have succumbed to the charm of this song.  It has been played in different rhythms, such as, jazz, bossa nova, or like the Beatles who gave it a rock tinge - the original being the romantic bolero.
